Surgical Oncology: Contemporary Principles and Practice offers in 24 chapters a comprehensive overview of state-of-the-art management of the most common solid neoplasms, reflecting the extraordinary advances that have been achieved over the last decade. More than 100 experts in their field, encompassing genetics, immunology, pharmacology, biostatistics, diagnostic radiology and imaging, surgery, pathology, radiation oncology, and medical oncology, among others, contributed their component from diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to clinical care. Furthermore, recent advances in genetic and molecular biology, innovative principles in screening, counselling and therapeutic clinical projects, as well as their integration into advanced oncological principles are included.
The first part of the volume characterises general aspects of cancer (cancer epidemiology, recent advances in the biology of cancer invasion and metastasis, overview of clinical oncology, diagnosis and staging, special diagnostic and therapeutic techniques, and nutrition and cancer), whereas the second part gives a systematic description of the management of the various organ-site tumours (skin, head and neck, lung, mediastinum, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, hepatobiliary, small intestine, large bowel, urological, gynecological neoplasm, breast cancer, soft tissue sarcomas, neoplasm of the endocrine system, mesothelioma, surgical management of lymphomas and surgical approaches in metastatic cancer).
All chapters cover anatomy, physiology, clinical presentation, treatment options and technical aspects, as well as outcome and quality of life considerations of the individual tumour. This provides the reader with a multidisciplinary very readable up-to-date holistic approach. Each chapter includes a comprehensive bibliography of carefully selected articles, reviews and books, which provides the reader with alternative viewpoints for selection of diagnostic and treatment approaches. A full detailed index facilitates a quick orientation. Although considered to be comprehensive with regard to the technical and operative strategies necessary for the surgical treatment of the various organ-site tumours, it does not replace standard textbooks of surgery, or operative atlases.
Surgical Oncology: Contemporary Principles and Practice is an excellent guidebook for anyone who cares for or manages patients with solid neoplasms and in particular for residents, fellows and practitioners of general surgical oncology. It provides the reader with surgical principles and techniques essential to contemporary clinical multidisciplinary management, which result in the comprehensive planning by the general surgical oncologist necessary for the successful management of any solid neoplasm.
