At the time of writing, a search in ClinicalTrials.gov yields six open studies evaluating the efficacy and safety of treating cancer patients with the antidiabetic biguanide metformin. At the European Institute of Oncology in Italy, the Division of Cancer Prevention and Genetics is planning a presurgical randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase II biomarker trial in which breast cancer (BC) patients not suitable for neo-adjuvant therapy will be randomly assigned to either metformin
